SP95-E10
What is SP95-E10?
SP95-E10 is an unleaded gasoline that contains up to 10% ethanol by volume, which reduces fossil gasoline consumption. SP95-E5 contains around 7.5% ethanol, either in its pure form or as a derivative (ETBE).
Why “E10”? “E” stands for Ethanol, while “10” indicates the maximum percentage of ethanol contained in this fuel.
What is bioethanol?
Bioethanol is an alcohol produced from plant-based raw materials such as:
• Sugar beets.
• Cereals (corn, wheat) and their processing residues.
This biofuel comes from a natural fermentation process of the sugars and starch contained in these plants. Beet pulp and cereal distillers grains are co-products used for animal feed, which ensures optimal resource valorization.
Why choose SP95-E10?
Introduced in France in 2009, SP95-E10 is designed to:
• reduce fossil gasoline consumption, by increasing the use of bioethanol, a renewable energy; augmentant l’utilisation de bioéthanol, une énergie renouvelable;
• strengthen France’s energy independencer by reducing its imports of oil and petroleum products.
Performance of SP95-E10
Vehicles running on SP95-E10 perform just as well as those using conventional SP95:
- ethanol improves the fuel’s octane rating, promoting more efficient combustion;
- the difference in fuel consumption is imperceptible, with an average increase of around 1%;
- the impact on fuel consumption is far lower than other factors, such as under-inflated tires.
A more eco-friendly fuel
SP95-E10 incorporates a renewable energy source—bioethanol—which helps reduce:
- net greenhouse gas emissions by more than 73% on average compared with fossil gasoline (source: CarbuRe – DGEC 2024);
- air pollution, as the ethanol portion emits far fewer fine particles during combustion than fossil gasoline.
An economic driver for local regions
The French bioethanol industry has a positive impact on local regions:
- local production – the bioethanol used in SP95-E10 is produced mainly in Hauts-de-France, the Paris Basin, Grand Est, and the South-West.
- employment – the sector represents around 8,900 direct, indirect, or induced jobs in the agricultural and industrial sectors (source: PwC 2014).
SP95-E10: France’s #1 gasoline
SP95-E10 has become the best-selling gasoline in France thanks to its availability,
with more than 77% of French service stations offering it.
SP95-E10 is currently being adopted across Europe.
In France, it is now widely available and compatible with the majority of vehicles on the road.
Compatibility with SP95-E10
99% of gasoline vehicles on the road are compatible with this fuel.
Other gasoline engines, such as those in boats or lawnmowers, can also run on SP95-E10.
